20 September – Bajada de San Jeronimo

It’s the pre-San Jeronimo festival with the bajada de San Jeronimo in Masaya. Big parade and a few surprises thrown in.

The patron saint of Leon is celebrated with a massive but solemn parade that starts from the church and carries the statue of the Virgin Mary on the shoulders of the faithful through the streets of the city. One of the sights worth seeing is the creation of the carpets of colored sawdust that the parade will walk over. The artists spend all night sprinkling the dust by hand to make religious designs and motifs. This is a tradition usually reserved for Easter but who can wait another six months? Let’s go experience the bajada de San Jeronimo!
